Bianca Carrasco: A Loving Mother and Nurse Missing for Nine Years

Figure 1: Bianca Carrasco. (Accredited Hoodline)

    Bianca Carrasco

In San Antonio, Texas, on the north side of town, it was a typical day for the Carrasco family on May 1, 2016. The family's mother, Bianca Carrasco, spent the day running errands while staying in contact with her oldest daughter. After arriving back home from the errand run, she got into an argument with her husband, Joe “Daniel” Carrasco, that ended with Daniel leaving the house with their youngest son. Daniel got into his car with his son and drove off. While they drove down the road, he passed Bianca as she walked. Bianca left her car and purse at the house when she left. The following day, her sister, Jovanna, tried to contact Bianca multiple times but was unable to reach her. Bianca had turned off her phone at around 10 P.M. the night before. In the following eight years, the last to see her was Daniel as she walked down the road.

    Who Was Bianca Carrasco?

Bianca was born on July 21, 1986, in Odessa, Texas. Her mother, Barbara, was a teenager when she had Bianca and Jovanna. Jovanna was only 18 months older, and it was partly because of that age gap that they were able to forge a strong sisterly bond. Barbara was constantly absent from the household, leading to the separation of Bianca’s mother and father. Eventually, Barbara entered another relationship with a man, which led the group to move to Virginia to live with their new stepfather. They lived there for a short time before Bianca moved back to Texas to live with her father, while Jovanna stayed in Virginia. A few years passed, and when Jovanna was 10, the sisters were reunited in Texas. Jovanna described the moment she saw her sister as a source of comfort. The sisters shared a room for the following years. In those years, they shared a room where they still dealt with an abusive father.

When Bianca was 17, she became pregnant. In response, her father kicked her out for the duration of the pregnancy. This choice haunted Bianca in the future. After suffering her father’s abuse, she moved back to her mother’s home in the hopes of starting fresh. This was when Bianca met her aunt’s ex-husband, Joe “Daniel” Carrasco. When they met, Bianca was 18, Daniel was 29, and they rapidly became inseparable. Daniel offered her an idea of stability, so she decided to move out of the apartment she shared with Jovanna to live with Daniel. The beginning of the relationship was rocky, with Daniel showing himself to be controlling, restricting what Bianca could eat. Eventually, Bianca became pregnant with their first daughter. When they had their second and third children, Jovanna noticed that the relationship seemed to be mending. Jovanna noted that Bianca had a devoted approach to both her family and career.

In 2013, Bianca and her family moved from Odessa to San Antonio. In 2016, Bianca became a registered nurse and landed a job in the Oncology department in Toepperwein Medical Center in Live Oak, Texas. Daniel worked at the oil fields in Odessa, commuting and working seven days while being off for another seven days. After moving to San Antonio, the couple found their marriage more unstable than before. The beginning of 2016 was smooth, but around February, there was a noticeable change when Bianca changed her Facebook relationship status to single. In March, Bianca started dating a man in secret, who will be referred to as Sam. Daniel went to Jovanna and her ex-husband to vent about the relationship. Daniel asked Jovanna to help him recover Bianca’s phone records to see if she was talking to anyone romantically. Daniel found the exchange between Bianca and Sam; this discovery led him to transfer their bank account funds into his own.

Bianca was left with one almost maxed-out credit card, which she used to purchase her phone, so Daniel could not have access to her phone records. Bianca reportedly contacted friends looking for a job that could pay enough to let her take care of her children. Once Sam found out she was married, he told Bianca they could continue the relationship once she was divorced. Jovanna claims this was what convinced Bianca to begin discussing divorce with Daniel. Around April 28 and 29, Bianca reported receiving texts from Daniel threatening to come to her job and kill her. When receiving the text messages, Bianca told her coworkers that if she went missing, her husband was most likely the culprit. She shared her fears with Jovanna, believing the divorce would not be easy, but she was ready for the divorce, choosing to be free rather than be in an abusive relationship.

    The Day She Disappeared

The dynamics of the house seemed to boil over on Sunday, May 1st, 2016. While Bianca was at home at around 2 PM, she called Jovanna. In that phone call, Bianca told her sister that she had set up an appointment with a divorce attorney for the end of the week. She wanted to separate from Daniel after he legally emptied her bank account. Afterwards, Bianca went on to run errands around town while keeping in touch with her oldest daughter while on the road. Bianca returned home from running errands and put the children to sleep at around 8 PM.

It was around this time, once Bianca put the children to sleep, that she contacted Sam. It began with a text message, but later there was a phone call; it was not recorded whether they spoke. Afterwards, it was reported that Daniel and Bianca had argued that night. At 10:22 PM, Bianca’s phone was turned off and was never turned back on. Daniel left the house with the youngest child, and as he drove, he reported seeing Bianca walking down the street.

The following day, Jovanna tried to contact Bianca on the morning of May 2nd. When Bianca did not answer, Jovanna believed it was most likely due to work. Jovanna grew concerned as the day went on without a word from Bianca; she contacted Daniel to find out what had happened to her sister. During the phone call, Daniel told Jovanna about the couple’s argument, and Bianca left the house. He told Jovanna that she had also left her car behind, with her purse inside. Jovanna decided to attempt to call Bianca the following day. On May 3rd, Jovanna decided to call Bianca’s job, where they told her that Bianca had not shown up for her shift and had not called out. After the discussion with Bianca’s employer, Jovanna decided to contact the police and file a missing person’s report.

    The Investigation

The police visited Jovanna in Houston and contacted Daniel. Daniel pretended it was the wrong number before hanging up. Later, he agreed to talk to the detectives, telling them that his wife was cheating on him. During questioning, Daniel told investigators he believed she ran away with Sam. He told investigators that he was taking his youngest child to his job when the child had daycare the following day. The detectives discovered that Daniel had quit his job weeks before the incident. He got another job, but while employed, he showed an apparent obsession with his wife’s activities, which distracted him so much that he was unable to keep it. Eventually, Child Protective Services was involved after the youngest’s daycare reported that Bianca and Daniel fought quite often. When CPS interviewed the daycare workers, they decided to remove all three children. CPS left the three children in Jovanna’s care for the following six months. Jovanna claimed that the police’s failure to incorporate the interviews CPS had with the children deprived the investigation of important information.

The police carried out the investigation, starting with the phones. When they checked Bianca’s phone, it was a typical day: she was texting her children while on errands and posting them in her Snapchat story when she was with them. The cops noted the 8:00 PM contact Bianca made with Sam. At 10:22 PM, Bianca’s phone was turned off, though officers also noted that Daniel made a phone call while Bianca’s phone was disconnected. When Daniel was questioned further, he refused to continue cooperating and hired a lawyer, which only further delayed the investigation. The investigators also questioned Sam, but no main suspect has been identified. Foul play has not been ruled out, but there is not enough evidence to support the foul play verdict. On May 23, 2016, the police determined foul play was not ruled out, though after questioning Sam, he was cleared of playing any part in the disappearance of Bianca. Daniel also told the police that he had to move out of the house because he could not make payments and gave the authorities access to the property. During their search, they found nothing worth noting. For the past nine years, the family and friends of Bianca have continued to bring the case to the public's attention, even after it was ruled a cold case.

    Family and Public Efforts

The search for Bianca involved officers from different departments, who also passed out fliers showing a picture of Bianca and what she was last seen wearing. During the search, Jovanna was described as the driving force. She is the one who pushed the police to treat the disappearance as a missing person’s case. Bianca and Jovanna’s mother also played a part in searching for Bianca. When asked about her sister, Jovanna told KSAT news, “She wouldn’t have taken off at all, and she certainly would not just vanish and not contact me or someone.” Proving she did not believe that Bianca had left voluntarily and was possibly lost somewhere.

Texas EquuSearch joined the search for Bianca, enlisting the help of ATVs, tracking dogs, and drones. The missing person’s advocacy group, Project Absentis, has been used by Jovanna to pressure investigators to renew the investigation. Over the years, the case has been considered a cold case. Absentis was either pushing for police to continue the investigation or was publicly calling for Daniel to take a polygraph test. There were also vigils in tribute to Bianca over the past nine years since she went missing. In May of 2024, the nonprofit organization Season of Justice put up a billboard as a reminder of Bianca’s case remaining unsolved. The billboard was on the I-10 near Wurzbach Road, where Bianca’s family and friends had an outreach event for Bianca. Julie Stinson, Bianca’s classmate, co-worker, and friend, told KENS5, “The more the family and friends make noise, the more they feel pressure to do something about it.”

We conducted an interview with Jovanna on The Original Sin Podcast, where we discussed the day Bianca went missing and the years that followed. Jovanna does not believe Daniel is being completely honest with investigators. This theory stems from Daniel's hesitation to file the missing person’s report, leaving Jovanna to call the authorities. She further describes that it is odd that his sister walked out of the house and down the street. Jovanna stated, “She does not even like being outside,” during the interview. When Jovanna told Daniel they were going to call the police, he insisted she was fine and there was no need to worry. That was when she filed the missing person’s report. Before Bianca had gone missing, she and Jovanna had prayed together, where Bianca discussed looking for Daniel’s firearm out of fear he might use it on her. On the day they prayed, Bianca told Jovanna that everything seemed to be coming to a head, the relationship getting uglier as the days passed, which only added to the stress Bianca was under. Jovanna noted during the interview that Bianca usually did not pray, except at meals. When Bianca and she prayed in separate rooms, Jovanna was concerned about Bianca’s safety.

During the interview, Jovanna discussed the excuse Daniel gave: that Bianca had gone to Mexico to start a new life. “She does not know Spanish,” Jovanna said. Sadly, during the interview, Jovanna, through tears, admitted she does not think Bianca may still be alive. However, her discovery is still detrimental to the family, especially her children, who believe their mother abandoned them. Jovanna says the children believe Bianca was a bad mother who left them behind to live with another man. This marked one of many podcasts and interviews Jovanna has done to raise awareness of Bianca’s case. Over the last nine years, Jovanna has appeared in multiple interviews with nonprofits and news stations, continuing to advocate for Bianca’s case.

Nine Years Later: Where does the case stand today?

Now that it is 2025, nine years have passed since Bianca went missing. The SAPD has recently labeled the case a cold case. In 2024, there was a significant development in forensic DNA analysis. The discovery came from a connection between two unrelated cold cases, where DNA linked a suspect to both crimes. Aside from the DNA holding a chance in helping with the case, there have also been social media posts made in memory of Bianca to help spread the word. Daniel has also become less involved in the case, not attending any of the events to raise awareness of Bianca. He is in a relationship with Bianca’s aunt on her father’s side after Bianca was considered a cold case.

In the last nine years, the reward for Bianca is a combined $6,000 from different nonprofits if any information is given that leads to her discovery. She was last seen wearing colorful pastel leggings and a blue jean jacket. She has a surgical scar on her abdomen and the letter “B” tattooed on her hip. Has she been seen or is there any information that could help, contact the San Antonio Police Department at (210)-207-7662.
